Tasmania is Australia's island state, consisting of an archipelago of over 330 islands. It is located 240 km south of the Australian mainland and it is approximately the size of Ireland or West Virginia. Even though some people refer to Tasmania as the 'edge of the world' or 'one of the world’s last remote wildernesses', it is in fact easily accessible.
Regular flights depart from Melbourne (less than 1 hour), Sydney (approx. 2 hours) and Brisbane (approx. 2 ½ hours) and fly direct to Tasmania's capital city of Hobart as well as Launceston. Direct flights are also available from Melbourne to Wynyard (Burnie), Devonport, King and Flinders Island.
Alternatively, visitors can travel to Tasmania from Melbourne by sea on the Spirit of Tasmania.
